What forest did it come from? What animals live there?<\/p>\n<p>After all, we ask those questions about the food we eat and the clothes we wear.<\/p>\n<p>Paper face similar challenges as food and clothes &#8211; like\u00a0<em>fast paper<\/em> and <em>paper loss<\/em>. Did you know we use over 1 million tons of paper\u00a0<i>every day<\/i> on our planet?<span class=\"s1\"> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">*4<\/span><\/span>. Around 90% of this paper comes from trees&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We want to give people, companies and the paper industry a fun and Fair Trade alternative that not only act on reduce the ecological <em>footprint<\/em>, (e.g less waste, CO2 and water usage), but also increase the ecological <em>handprint <\/em>(e.g more trees, wildlife and renewable energy)<em>.\u00a0<\/em>One Planet Paper\u00ae is a product inspired by nature (biomimicry), upcycling agricultural waste from organic banana farms.\u00a0So let&#8217;s &#8220;go bananas&#8221; with us!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-527 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/oneplanetcafe.com\/paper\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_9336.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1834\" height=\"1236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oneplanetcafe.com\/paper\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_9336.jpg 1834w, https:\/\/oneplanetcafe.com\/paper\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_9336-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oneplanetcafe.com\/paper\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_9336-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oneplanetcafe.com\/paper\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_9336-1024x690.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oneplanetcafe.com\/paper\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_9336-1484x1000.jpg 1484w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1834px) 100vw, 1834px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u25a0 Fair trade and the Global Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2010 we had a half-crazy idea: Finding a way to produce &#8220;a paper that can help reduce both extreme poverty and environmental problems&#8221; at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>We did\u00a0<em>not<\/em> come from the paper industry, but from a bckground as environmental experts (activists). We had visited the biodiversity &#8220;hot spot&#8221; of Zambia where we saw wonderful wildlife but also extreme poverty &#8211; and lots of small scale banana farms. Back in Tokyo, we approach printing fiems, paper product makers, and small-scale paper companies. They admitted that a more ethical and sustainable alternative to tree paper &#8211; sooner or later &#8211; was going to be necessary. The rest is history&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, we connected the banana paper\u00a0to all 17 Global Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, banana paper became one of the first Fair Trade verified (labeled) paper.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, we were recognized by Japans Ministry of Finance as one of Japans good examples towards the Global Goals<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, banana paper became Climate Positive.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, a Generation Z survey in Japan chose us (One Planet Caf\u00e9) as one of the top ethical companies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, we collaborate with small scale paper mills in both Japan and UK to produce a high quality and Fair Trade banana paper being sold in 20 countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u25a0 Who made your paper? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The question &#8220;Who made my&#8230;?&#8221; is today common for the clothes we wear to the food we eat. But honestly, paper?<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Who made<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0the paper in our notebooks? What kind of life do they live &#8211; and what animals live in the forests that this paper originates from? This is one of many questions we asked when we started our banana paper journey with the aim at &#8220;putting a face on the paper&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">From the first stages in Zambia (banana fiber) to the last stages (return to soil *<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">2<\/span>), sustainability was integrated step by step. \u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Source: *1 WFTO World Fair Trade Organization Certification 2020 \/ BioCarbon Partners, VCS Verified Carbon Standard Certification 2021 | \u00a0*2 Biodegradable composting experiment, Japan 2021 (to soil within 2 weeks)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u25a0 Why Japan?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s paper production <b>is the third largest in the world<\/b> after China and the United States. The per capita consumption is more than 200 kg per year. For example, in the case of printing (copy) paper, 1 in 5 sheets comes from delicate tropical froests (including rainforests)\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">*5<\/span><\/span>. In total, we are losing more forests than are being regenerated\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">*6<\/span><\/span>. The impact can be huge&#8230;like endangered species living in forests (tigers, elephants, orangutans etc.) and destruction of ecosystems. And when we lose forests, we also <span class=\"s2\">lose the ability to absorb<\/span>\u00a0enough\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">CO2<\/span>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Deforestation also leads to poverty in developing countries who rely on forests for food, fuel, and income.<\/p>\n<p>We have seen this with our own eyes. We believe it can be pushed further! Paper may sound boring, but doing it sustainability correct, can contribute to not only a better environment, but also create a positive social impact. That&#8217;s why we call our banana paper One Planet Paper\u00ae\ufe0e.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>\u25a0 Circular Paper<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A comprehensive circular product<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">needs to connect with the following TWO cycles: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>(1)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Technical Cycle. This is the\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Human-made<\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><strong>cycle<\/strong>\u00a0where we find the <b>3R<\/b>: <b>R<\/b>educe, <b>R<\/b>euse, <b>R<\/b>ecycle<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>(2)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span> Bio <span class=\"s1\">Cycle. This is the Nature-made <b>cycle<\/b>\u00a0created by nature. On the other hand, banana trees (&#8220;herb&#8221; to be precise, it is called a &#8220;stem&#8221;) grows in <b>just one year<\/b>. Moreover, each tree bear fruit only once per tree. And only ONE bunch of bananas per lifetime. When harvesting bananas, the mother stem must be cut to allow 2-3 new &#8220;banana babies&#8221; (shoots) to grow up.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, you give back MORE to nature than you take (the bio cycle).<\/p>\n<p>The newborn banana babies the grow up (regenerate) within one year.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the disposed of banana tree we make the banana paper from. It cpntains hogh quality fiber &#8211; the basic ingredient to paper. We the disposed of trees from the local banana farmers, enabling them to earn an income of both the fruit and the waste!<\/p>\n<p>Yes. It shows\u00a0organic banana fields, banana stems, and wildlife in Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>OnePlanet Paper\u00ae uses fibers from stems that are usually discarded in Zambia&#8217;s organic banana fields, \u00a0adds recycled paper to a washi factory in Japan, and a historic paper mill in UK, to produce high-quality paper.
